Joshy's Birthday Outing on St. Patrick's Day

Joshua was a tremendous trooper about having to wait six months to do his birthday outing.  With Ruthie's birth being so close to Joshy's birthday, it was too much to try to prepare for her arrival and plan his desired outing.  Then there was the weeks of adjusting to five kids (I feel like we are still adjusting!), Eric's surgery, Christmas, basketball and swimming, which brought us to March.  Joshy was very patient, but was relieved to finally get his birthday wish of going to...the Model Train Museum!
We went after church after we stopped at Jamba Juice and the Breadsmith for lunch.  Joshy remembers this museum though the last time we went he was four.  The girls were very excited to go to the museum they'd heard so much about.  It really is a neat place, and while it was a bit nerve-wracking making sure none of the little girls touched any of the sets, we all enjoyed just watching the trains go around and around.

When Joshy was little, he was a huge Cars fan.  I think he still has a spot in his heart for them, though he has mostly outgrown the infatuation.  Nevertheless, he was excited to see the incorporated the Cars characters into the models.  See them in the corner of the picture?
Wow when I see pictures like these I can't believe how my little boy is becoming almost a young man!  Yikes!  See how high he is above the rail?  Hard to believe when we first took him here, he was more like this girl.
A new addition to the train Museum was the Children's Exhibit.  Here the kids were allowed to touch more things.  The kids all loved driving the children's trains sets.

There were whole extravagant models set up that were interactive.  A button on the outside activated something on the inside, like a Ferris wheel turning or a plane zooming or even just a tiny campfire with a harmonica playing cowboy.  There were a few of these in the original exhibit, but far more in the children's.  Sophia is demonstrating the buttons as well as showing me her weirdest smile.

After we got home, good and tired, we let the kids put on the St. Patrick's tattoos they got from their grandma.  Lydia was just tickled with this little Irish man on her leg.  She could even make him "dance" by pinching and pushing the skin around it, much to her delight.
We missed the big all-green-food feast at Eric's parents' and the kids were disappointed, so we did the best we could with what we had.
Pickles, broccoli, and a huge shamrock cookie (from Grandma).  I'm not a smidgen Irish, but I am glad I married into a family that is.  That must be where my kids get their goofy-ness, right, Lella?
"Uh, where's my pickle?"
