Niagara Falls-Day 3: Butterfly Conservatory
After the Whitewater walk, we took a "Peoplemover" bus to the Butterfly Conservatory. Here are housed more than 2000 butterflies! The kids had been looking forward to this immensely, but I have to say, after the experience of having two of our own butterflies live in our house for awhile, they were a tad disappointed. I think Joshy thought that he'd be covered in butterflies, but later mentioned that his butterfly at home was more exciting. What was thrilling was the sheer number and wild diversity.
Our favorite butterfly was the Blue Morpho. It was very big! When its wings are closed, it is this drab brown with spots that look like eyes in order to scare away predators. When its wings open, they show off an iridescent blue, just beautiful. I never did get a photo of that though, since butterflies always rest with their wings closed (moths, on the other hand, rest with their wings open). Blue Morphos are native to rain forests and feed on fruit.

There was a window into the hatching area. Once the butterflies hatch, they just fly right out into the area where we were.
And, of course, holding a butterfly was the highlight.

We weren't sure Sophia would be gentle enough, but she still got a close look.
We kept marveling at how God could have made all these different kinds! How creative!
One sad moment...a pretty butterfly landed on the ground and was unfortunately stepped on by another person. Joshy was pretty upset about it. He decided to pick up the poor creature and put it somewhere out of the way.
Thankfully, there were other butterflies to cheer him up.
And Mari, too.
